I especially enjoy this image because of the memories and sense of place it evokes.

To me, it’s exciting to go to a play, and it’s especially exciting to go to a play at the Ashland Shakespeare Festival — for the plays, for the acting, for theater outdoors.

We usually go in early June. In the evening, after dinner out, we walk to the festival, joining other theater-goers along the way.

From Main Street, it’s a short uphill walk on Pioneer Street to the festival. I continued past the festival for this view.

On this sunlit June evening, just above the hubub, I could hear a lively Celtic band, and enjoyed the rich color of the evening light on the hills beyond the valley.

In the outdoor theater, the play that night was Cyrano de Bergerac. The lead actor didn’t just play Cyrano. He WAS Cyrano, complete with attitude.

And during the play, I watched the evening light fade into night, and enjoyed the fragrance of the forest, just to the west.

Ahh, poor Cyrano, who only at death’s threshold could lie in his beloved Roxane’s arms.
